Job Description: The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.
• Perform responsible preventative maintenance and mechanical repair work related to the maintenance and repair of specialized fire vehicles, heavy fire apparatus, and related mechanical equipment.
• Determine preventative maintenance needs, provides necessary maintenance and repairs for all fire vehicles, including heavy fire apparatus, and equipment.
• Check operating efficiency of fire vehicles, heavy fire apparatus, and fire mechanical equipment.
• Determine stock needs and orders and maintains replacement parts and supplies.
• Diagnose and Repair engines, transmissions, brake systems, hydraulic systems, water pumps and accessories.
• Ensure pump systems provide appropriate volumes of water at specified pressures during periodic and required annual pump testing.
• Perform general maintenance of all fire equipment including oiling and lubricating various components.
• Perform heavy vehicle systems and component failure analyses.
• Ensure fire apparatus conforms to National Fire Protection Association (N.F.P.A.) standards.
• Respond to emergency callouts and mutual aid requests for mechanic services and performs emergency field repairs on fire apparatus and related equipment.
• Attend regular training to maintain basic and advanced skills and certifications.
• Assist the Maintenance Supervisor in identifying appropriate training opportunities for Heavy Vehicle Mechanics and the Apprentice Mechanic with a goal of providing succession training.
• Perform related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
• Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment.
• Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
• May assist in training lower-level workers in automotive mechanic techniques.
• Road test vehicles
• Complete records, maintains tools and equipment, and performs various clean-up activities.
• Observe and follow all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment.
- Knowledge of:
o Methods and tools used in repair and maintenance of fire vehicle apparatus, including diesel engines, fire pumps, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
o Basic record keeping and work order system procedures.
o Diagnostic software as it relates to general automotive fleet, fire apparatus and heavy vehicle equipment.
o N.F.P.A. standards for commercial and fire vehicles.
o Microsoft Windows Office Suite applications and computerized fleet work order systems. - Ability to:
o Operate and drive a variety of fire vehicles and equipment.
o Understand, diagnose, and repair / troubleshoot modern fire apparatus electrical systems, including computerized engine, transmission, and brake systems.
o Use mechanic tools and diagnostic equipment with skill and safety.
o Plan, organize, assign, and coordinate the work of assigned staff.
o Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance or required duties.
